PREVENTION TO SLIPS, TRIPS & FALLS

25% of the accidents in Workplace are slips, trips and falls related.

Everyone is exposed to these risks, everywhere, at any time.


How to prevent slips, trips & falls
- Report unsafe situations
- Intervene if someone is exposed to a high risk situation
- Implement preventive actions and behaviors
  • ·         Use handrails while using stairs
  • ·         Close any draws after usage
  • ·         Use a hand cart to transport any large object
  • ·         Maintain good housekeeping
  • ·         Work with sufficient light and use safety eyewear when necessary
  • ·         Mark pedestrian walks and keep them clear
  • ·         Wear suitable footwear
  • ·         Conduct 2 min for my safety (when on mission), use the Stop work authority if necessary, and Do not run




At Job site and laboratories

Housekeeping
  • ·         Obstructed areas with samples in laboratories
  • ·         Inappropriate chemicals storage

Working environment
  • ·         Debris on the floor (tubes, dump, loose items…)
  • ·         Manholes, hatches
  • ·         Wet, greasy or oily surfaces
  • ·         Liquid spillage
  • ·         Uneven floor or irregular steps; no handrails


In office

Housekeeping
  • ·         Uncovered or trailing cables
  • ·         Opened drawers
  • ·         Material carriage
  • ·         Clutter and obstructions

Working environment
  • ·         Wet, polished or freshly waxed surfaces
  • ·         Loose flooring, carpeting or mats
  • ·         Taking the stairs
  • ·         Spills in parking areas (oil, water, grease…)


Moreover, behaviors play a critical factor that also generate slips, trips and falls.


Behaviors
  • ·         Walking without looking where you are going
  • ·         Climbing the stairs without holding handrails
  • ·         Wearing soiled shoes
  • ·         Leaning the chair back or standing on it
  • ·         Rushing or running
  • ·         Stepping over boxes  or any other obstacles
  • ·         Ignoring warning signs
  • ·         Ignoring dangerous situations and not reporting them
  • ·         Being distracted (phone, talking, eating…
